Curriculum Intent

At Frederick Gent School students study one of two languages, French or German. All students study a language until the end of Y9 and students who opt will specialise in either French or German to GCSE.  We aim for our students to develop the skills that they need to be successful for their studies and life beyond the classroom.  Lessons take place in well-equipped classrooms and we also have a set of chrome books within the department to enhance language learning through the use of online and interactive programmes. We encourage our students to foster a curiosity and to deepen their understanding of the world around them. Furthermore, we believe that the trips abroad are an important part of language learning as well as the development of cultural understanding. In previous years, we have organised trips to France and Germany where students enjoyed a variety of sightseeing and cultural activities.

In Year 7 and Year 8 students have 5 lessons of either French or German per fortnight. In Year 7 first half term is used to ensure all students familiarise themselves with the basics as well as allowing those with prior knowledge of language learning to expand upon their previous learning. Lessons then move on to explore key topics and grammar concepts.

Students have 4 lessons per fortnight in Year 9 and 5 lessons per fortnight in Year 10 and 11. French and German use the Edexcel exam specification. At the end of Year 11 students will complete exams in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The four skills are equally weighed.

In both languages the topics include 6 main themes: my personal world, lifestyle and wellbeing, my neighbourhood, media and technology, studying and future plans, travel and tourism. Lessons expand on a variety of key skills such as grammar and translation work, acquired in KS3, incorporating the use of IT, videos, authentic materials, including cultural elements such as television, media and music.
