Curriculum Intent

We promote mathematics as a positive experience and a subject to enjoy, we develop resilience and perseverance through the delivery of a comprehensive curriculum which equips students with the fundamental mathematical knowledge to succeed in everyday life.  We aim high and encourage the best from both staff and students.

In Year 7 and 8, the students are initially grouped based on achievement at KS2 alongside additional information gained from staff at the feeder primary schools.  Y7 and Y8 students follow a scheme linked to the MyMaths curriculum which embraces problem solving and application of mathematics alongside the core skills.  Students will follow a pathway that offer opportunities of challenge that increases over time.

Throughout the year all students will study topics associated with Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Shape, Space and Measures and Data Handling

Students are assessed regularly in class through end of chapter tests and more formally through termly assessments which cover accumulated knowledge.

Homework is set regularly and will consolidate work undertaken in class.

Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 work towards the OCR J560 GCSE Mathematics qualification alongside the AQA GCSE *Statistics 8382 qualification.  The starting point is dependent on the understanding and progress made in Y7 and 8.

The GCSE course is broken down into a series of modules that increase in difficulty; Initial, Bronze, Silver and Gold with the additional module of Platinum for the Foundation tier students.  In January of Y11, a final decision will be made as to which tier of entry a student will be entered for; the Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5 and the Higher tier covers grades 4 to 9.

Students are assessed regularly in class through end of unit assessments (these usually cover 5 chapters of work), end of module assessments, and more formally through end of year exams.  In Year 11, students will undertake at least two sets of mock examinations – these comprise of a series of GCSE examinations.

The GCSE Mathematics examination comprises of three 1 hour 30-minute examinations of which one is taken without a calculator.

The GCSE Statistics examination comprises of two 1 hour 45-minute examinations.

Homework is set regularly and will consolidate work undertaken in class.
