At Frederick Gent School our values are Ambition, Bravery and Care. These values shape and support everything that we do. Our approach to homework is founded on these three values.
It is based on the ambition that students will know more and be more successful in their learning. It also needs our students to show bravery by trying to learn for themselves even if sometimes this is difficult. Lastly it shows care because it is very much linked to everyone, students, parents and staff caring about the learning and education our students receive. It is also about caring that the students are equipped to leave us set ready to carry on learning in the new roles they find themselves in.
The last point is key and it links to the Frederick Gent mission which is to set our students up to have “lives that are happy, successful and fulfilled.”
Homework is vital to this because it’s about your child’s power over THEIR learning!
It communicates a sense that learning is something that they control and can affect.
This is really important because it is not just about doing well at school. At some point your child will no longer have the benefit of a teacher to lead and support their learning. They will, whether as part of further study or in a job, be expected to learn much more one their own. Homework is the first step towards preparing them for this.
